How the roof tools work
Where each number comes from, what it can honestly claim, and what it explicitly is not. Reviewed August 14, 2026.

Aerial roof measurement
Roof area, roofing squares, pitch, and supported edge lengths from a US street address.
Data source. The address is geocoded, then the tool reads an aerial elevation model (a digital surface model derived from aerial lidar survey data, requested at 0.1-meter pixel size) together with a building mask and aerial imagery for that location. The measured boundary is the one the visitor confirms on the imagery before measurement runs.
Method. The engine fits planes to the elevation data inside the confirmed boundary, classifies the resulting facets by pitch, and derives ridge, hip, valley, and eave lengths from the fitted geometry. Area splits at 3/12: steeper facets report as sloped roof, 2/12 and under as low-slope. The printed report states the survey flight year and lidar point density for the property, because the answer is only as current as the flight.
Confidence tiers. Tier A and B results include the supported edge network; when the underlying data cannot support edges honestly, the tool falls back to tier C, which reports area and squares only rather than showing low-confidence linework.
What it is not. An aerial estimate, never a surveyed takeoff, a price, or a contract quantity. Tree cover, construction newer than the survey flight, and gaps in lidar coverage all reduce what can be measured, and the report says so. A documented on-site measurement is the final word for scope and material orders.

Storm history
Public National Weather Service storm reports near a US address.
Data sources. The address is converted to coordinates by the US Census Bureau geocoder. Hail and wind reports come from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet archive of National Weather Service local storm reports, a public record.
Method. Reports are filtered to a 15-mile straight-line radius around the geocoded point across the last 5 years, split into wind and hail, with the highest numeric wind magnitude of the last two years and any reports labeled as hurricanes or tropical systems called out. The tool reports distances from the geocoded point, not from the parcel boundary.
What it is not. Local storm reports are point observations: a storm nobody reported does not appear, and a nearby report does not establish that any particular roof was hit. The tool never claims damage; it shows the public record so a documented inspection can establish the rest.

Roof visualizer
A manufacturer color rendered onto a photo of the visitor's own house.
Method. The photo is resized on the visitor's own device, which also strips camera metadata such as GPS location, then sent once to an outside image service (OpenAI) to render the selected material onto the roof in the photo. The color choices are the published palettes of named manufacturers, entered from their printed color sheets; the result returns to the browser and is not stored on our servers.
What it is not. A design concept, not the finished roof. Lighting, photography, and screens all shift color, so the concept narrows choices and a physical sample in daylight confirms them.

Method. These four run entirely in the browser on published reference data. The roof age tool compares an install year against the same typical industry service-life ranges the roof-systems library publishes. The system finder narrows system families from four stated answers. The self-check and storm documentation tools structure the visitor's own ground-level observations into a dated record.
What they are not. None of them inspect, diagnose, price, or approve anything. Age ranges describe materials, not any particular roof; checklists record what a person saw from the ground, and an unchecked item never means confirmed absent.
